Burde, Visiting Assistant Professor in International Education, received two grants totaling approximately $580,000 from the Spencer Foundation and the National Science Foundation
These grants support her study of the impact of community-based education services delivered to civilian populations affected by war. The research, based in Afghanistan, examines the impact of educational services on children's welfare, especially protection from violence and life chances. It works with a partner NGO to implement random assignment of schools and program interventions to eligible villages. The research investigates whether community-based education programs improve child welfare by comparing villages that receive schools to villages that have not yet received them (but will receive them within a year's time), and by comparing all children across both sets of villages. The study examines attendance/enrollment, academic achievement, child labor, and social benefits (protection, social networks).
