The B.M. program in music performance provides intensive training within a renowned liberal arts university. The degree consists of a total, 130 credits: 40 credits in liberal arts and 90 in music. Students receive a broad foundation in core music classes including four semesters each in music history, music theory, aural comprehension, and keyboard harmony and improvisation. Performance students have dozens of ensemble opportunities including chamber groups (woodwind quintets and mixed groups) along with symphony and repertory orchestras (guest conductors include Tania Leon and Gunther Schuller). In addition, students have the opportunity to play in orchestras for fully staged opera and music theatre productions directed by leading New York City conductors. Students also have weekly private study with renowned faculty woodwind faculty. Students are in repertoire classes each week often in master class settings.
Junior and Senior Recitals are required in the third and fourth years. Students are also urged to widen their horizons by taking elective classes in other areas of music such as Music Business (concert management, record business, etc.), Music Technology, Jazz Studies, or Music Education.
