Summer Workshop for Woodwind Quintets and Orchestral Repertoire

Summer Institute for High School Students, College Students and Young Professionals who play flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon or French horn.

An intensive week of masterclasses, concerts, workshops and open rehearsals at NYU in the heart of New York City's Greenwich Village in collaboration with The Quintet of the Americas: "musical dialogue at the highest level" - Washington Post.

The Quintet of the Americas is one the Western Hemisphere's finest chamber ensembles. The Quintet is in residence in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions at NYU Steinhardt. The group's mission is to broaden the knowledge and appreciation of woodwind chamber music by performing contemporary, classical and folk-derived music from the diverse cultural traditions of the Americas, and the performing, commissioning and recording of woodwind quintets and related chamber music. Daily Schedule:

9 am morning meeting with all students
9:30- 12 noon coaching with woodwind quintet faculty
12- 1 lunch
1-3:30 Master classes
4:30-5:30 rehearsal student quintets
5:30-6:30 rehearsals with Quintet of the Americas

Housing/Meals

Participants will stay in the Hayden Hall dormitory, on Washington Square Park, ideally located at the heart of NYU's main classrooms and facilities. Bedrooms have a bed, desk, dresser and closet/armoire for each student. Rooms are air-conditioned, but they do not have telephone or Internet access. There is 24-hour security and trained Resident Assistants (RA) assigned to each floor. Participants will receive a package of bed linens with a small towel when they arrive. Participants who request a single will not have a roommate, while participants in doubles will be assigned to live with one or two other participants from the program.

A meal plan is not included. Participants will receive more information about housing after they have been accepted to the program.

Cost

The cost for the program is $875. Meal plan and housing are not included in the program fee. The fee for housing is $360 for doubles and $480 for singles.

*If you are unable to attend a live audition in the spring, you should send a CD or tape with two contrasting pieces from the standard literature of your instrument.
The application deadline is April 1. Applications accepted after the deadline on a space available basis.

***PLEASE NOTE: Participants under the age of 18 will be required to attend activities on practically every evening during the program. Activities will include trips to the theatre, concerts and visits to important sites throughout New York City.***
