New York University’s New Plays for Young Audiences Series announces its 2008 Summer season. Founded in 1997 by Lowell and Nancy Swortzell, NYU’s prize-winning project (Special Recognition Award from the American Alliance in Theatre and Education), New Plays for Young Audiences, has been held each June for the last ten years and has developed 30 new plays, most of which have won major prizes, and received publication and production throughout the world (at the Children’s Theatres of Nashville, Dallas, Seattle, the Kennedy Center, the National Theatre in London, to name a few). Time Out/New York has said of this project, “Some of our best plays for young people have been polished during the NYU Educational Theatre Program’s series.” These have been written by leading playwrights, including Jose Cruz Gonzalez, Bryony Lavery, Kevin Willmott, Laurie Brooks, Y York, Susan Zeder, Max Bush, and R.N. Sandburg. Presented at the historic Provincetown Playhouse in the heart of Greenwich Village, New Plays for Young Audiences fosters and develops new plays from around the world for young audiences and families. This year the series is overseen by Artistic Director Dr. David Montgomery, Producer Branden Huldeen and Series Stage Manager Katie Pelkey.

An open forum discussion with the playwright & creative team follows each Sunday performance.

WHAT CAN’T BE SEEN

Nan, a molecular biologist, and Natalia, her 16 year old violinist daughter, have just lost the man they love most in the world. How they cope with his death is explored in this sometimes funny, sometimes dream-like adult drama. Close friends, potential lovers, and an array of eccentric strangers flow in and out as Nan and Natalia try to maintain their equilibrium, vent their grief, and understand what lies beyond the surface of their lives. Love, mystery, inspiring meals, and a box of ashes lead them on solitary journeys that challenge the bonds holding them together.

Where do dreams come from? What stealthy nighttime messengers are the guardians of our most deeply hidden hopes and half-forgotten fears? GOSSAMER confronts these questions and explores the conflicts between the gentle bits and pieces of the past that come to life in dream and the darker horrors that find their form in nightmare. In a story that tiptoes between reality and imagination, two people—a lonely, sensitive woman and a damaged, angry boy—face their own histories and discover what they can be to each other, renewed by the strength that comes from tiny, caring creatures they will never see.
