Music Composition
The Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions at NYU Steinhardt draws outstanding composers into its B.M., M.M., and Ph.D. programs in music composition. Specializations include traditional, computer interactive, film, and music theatre composition. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these specializations which are supported by an internationally acclaimed faculty representing diverse styles.
The composition faculty includes Robert Rowe, Dinu Ghezzo, Justin Dello Joio, Marc Consoli, Ira Newborn, Ron Sadoff, Joseph Church, John Gilbert, Youngmi Ha, Steven Rosenhaus, Jerica Oblak, Ezequiel Viñao, Ron Mazurek, Deniz Hughes and Mike Patterson, in addition to annual "Distinguished Visiting Composers" such as Leo Kraft, George Perle, Roger Reynolds, Larry Austin, Morton Subotnick, Joel Chadabe, Richard Boulanger, Robert Craft, George Crumb, John Corigliano, and Tan Dun.
Composition students have regular readings of their works by outstanding department performance groups and faculty including The Lumina Quartet, Prism Brass Quintet, The Quintet of the Americas, The NYU New Music and Dance Ensemble, The NYU Symphony Orchestra and The NYU Choral Arts Society as well as instrumental and vocal ensembles of every configuration. Film composers are presented in yearly concerts at The Walter Reade Theatre in collaboration with The Film Society of Lincoln Center, and intensive film scoring workshops in collaboration with ASCAP.
The Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions offers a warm and collegial atmosphere. Students attend master classes with today's leading composers in New York City. Compositions students enjoy the support of all of the faculty and their peers as well. Our reputation, faculty, and location provide students with a unique opportunity to develop as composers and to make the contacts necessary to launch a professional career.
