Counseling

The Office of Counseling and Student Services provides a wide range of support and assistance for NYU Steinhardt students. These include:

New Student Orientation Programs

Orientation sessions for new undergraduate and graduate students are scheduled during the summer and at the beginning of each fall and spring semester. During orientation to The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, students will meet their advisor, learn more about their academic major and coursework, begin to discover the array of student services and activities available to them, explore the campus and the new neighborhood, meet other classmates, and have some fun. During University Orientation, students will have the opportunity to participate in workshops, activities and events--all designed to help them get started--with other new classmates who are also beginning their studies in one of the other divisions at NYU.

New Student Seminar

The New Student Seminar, a required first semester course for new undergraduate students, continues orientation to the University and The Steinhardt School of Education and introduces students to their programs of study as they begin to explore their role as a student in this diverse and global academic community and as an aspiring professional in their chosen field of study. The New Student Seminar Reading, a literary work that raises questions important to this process of exploration, culminates with the New Student Academic Convocation. A New International Student Seminar is offered for new international graduate students in The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. This is also a required course which continues their orientation to the University, the School and the culture.

Academic Achievement

The Dean's List is an honor roll compiled at the end of each Fall and Spring term, and recognizes undergraduates who have maintained a term average of 3.7 or better in a program of study of at least 8 points within the School. Sophomores and Juniors on the dean's List may be invited to partipate in the Dean's Research Travel Colloquium, which celebrates excellence and outstanding academic performance, including leadership and community service.

Student Organizations

The Office of Counseling and Student Services advises both the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) and the Graduate Student Organization (GSO), which both represent the voices of the School of Culture, Education, and Human Development student body. Staff advisers also assist School of Culture, Education, and Human Development-based clubs and organizations, providing leadership development and training for its members.
