Multinational Institute of American Studies

The institute was organized in l98l, as part of the Program in International Education, to promote and upgrade the study of the United States abroad at all levels of schooling, to provide government officials, businessmen, and educators from other countries with a more accurate understanding of the United States, and to conduct research on the way people in other countries perceive and teach about the United States. In addition to supporting research on educational and cultural exchange between the United States and other countries, the Institute conducts short-term, noncredit programs during the academic year and the summer. Funding comes from a variety of sources, including the United States Department of State, Fulbright commissions, foreign ministries of education, businesses, and nonprofit organizations like the Academy for Educational Development. Since its founding, the Institute has conducted programs for over 1,000 foreign educators, government officials, journalists, diplomats and businessmen from more than 100 countries. Institute staff have also served as consultants on upgrading the study of the United States at universities, colleges, research and policy centers in a number of countries, including Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Turkey Egypt, Armenia, Belarus, Russia, China, Korea, Thailand, India and Japan.
