In light of new developments in the areas of child and school psychology, the faculty are pursuing new opportunities for strengthening our doctoral program in school psychology.
As a consequence, we will not be reviewing applications for the PhD program in School Psychology for Fall 2009. We are also not accepting applications for the PsyD or Certificate Programs.
Ph.D. in School Psychology (APA & NASP accredited)
The Applied Psychology Department offers an APA accredited Ph.D. program (SCPT) in School Psychology. This program calls for 102 points beyond the Bachelor's degree in addition to related field experiences and internship requirements, plus research‑related and dissertation requirements. It is possible, but unusual, to complete the program in four years of full-time attendance beyond the Bachelor's degree. Full time attendance is highly recommended but not required. HOWEVER IT WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE TO WORK FULL TIME BECAUSE OF FIELD WORK REQUIREMENTS THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM.
Please note that all school psychology students must be available for field placements during weekday school hours.
Our primary aim is to train academic psychologists prepared for research, teaching, and supervision in a university setting. However, graduates are considered to be psychologists with specialized training applicable to work in schools, hospitals, and community mental health agencies and are eligible in most states to be licensed for the professional practice of psychology. In New York, and most other states, licensing eligibility also requires a year of postdoctoral supervised experience.
Students not possessing a Master’s in psychology can earn a Master’s degree in school psychological services en route to the doctorate. The Master's degree is not granted as a terminal degree. Only students accepted for enrollment in the doctoral program are eligible.
